Aw shucks it’s Monday again… But the next beautiful lady featured in this month’s edition of the TML Collective is sure to inspire you as well as brighten your morning! Kathryn Steed left her job in corporate America to pursue her passion and begin Lush Cakery, a modern bakery specializing in made-to-order wedding cakes and creative cupcakes. She is now living her passion every single day and doing what she loves for a living.
When Josh and I were looking for wedding cake recommendations for our wedding, Lush Cakery was the overwhelming response! Kat is so incredibly talented, people raved not only about how beautiful, but also how delicious our wedding cake was for months after our big day. If you are on the search for a wedding cake vendor in Atlanta, I encourage you to call Lush Cakery- you won’t be disappointed!
What inspired you to leave corporate America and begin your own business?
I wanted to go to culinary school since I was young but my mom encouraged me to get a “normal” degree first and see if I still felt the same once I graduated. After graduating with a marketing degree from KSU, I did the corporate cubical life for a year and absolutely hated it. I was introduced to a wedding cake baker through a woman I used to nanny for and knew that this was my calling. She opened her mind and home to me, teaching me everything I needed to know. Waiting tables and apprenticing with her was quite the financial risk, but my happiness was way more important than settling for a job I didn’t love. Overtime, I gained the confidence to start my own business and always kept another side job, just in case something fell through. It took me 7 years, a 3-month hiatus to CA and another shot in Corporate America to finally trust that this was God’s plan for me and to give it 110%. Life is too short not to follow your dreams and I want to wake up every morning knowing that I am serving His purpose for my life.
What does a typical day in your shoes look like?
I love knocking out a workout first thing in the morning to start my day off on the right foot. After that it’s off to the kitchen to either bake, fill or decorate cakes. Throughout the day, I knock out some emails, plan tasting appointments and grab lunch. Depending on the week a cocktail might be involved ☺
To what do you attribute your success?
Always counting my blessings. I am so grateful for the people that God has placed in my life to get me where I am today. Kimberley, who took me under her wing and taught me everything I needed to know to have a successful business. I would never be where I am today without her support and guidance. Wedding vendors who refer business to me and send me the sweetest brides. Venues who have contracted me for package deals. I try not to take any of that for granted and treat others the way I want to be treated.
What have been some of your greatest challenges while building Lush Cakery?
It started more as a hobby while working other jobs. Once I decided to give it 100% I struggled with how I wanted to market myself. I started using Facebook Ads and getting referrals from friends. Overtime, vendors starting referring brides to me and I was able to acquire a venue as a preferred vendor to their package. It took 6 years to give up the security of another job and focus on Lush full time. It was a leap of faith but I am so glad I finally put my fear aside and trusted in my ability to succeed!
Do you have any time management hacks for running your business most efficiently?
I am fairly organized when it comes to time management. I keep a planner, yes I still write everything down, and try to knock out paper work and book keeping on my day off. I TRY to stay off my social media accounts during the day or else I could lose an hour of work in no time.
